Acne comes from the Greek word “akme” which means skin eruption. It indicates an appearance of bumps on the skin areas caused by the accumulation of bacteria. Acne is a skin condition disease that occurs when the pore becomes plugged with dead skin cells, germs and oil. It is developed when there are blockages in hair follicles causing inflammation. It is common on face but it also on appears on the neck, chest, upper shoulders and upper back. There are different types of acne and they are whiteheads, blackheads, pimples and cysts. Whiteheads are clogged pores that reside on the upper layer of the skin. Whiteheads have small opening which can turn to grayish brown and black which will become blackheads. The accumulation of bacteria within the pores can lead to pus production which are called pimples. Pus filled lesions that leads to deeper inflammation are called cysts.
Although anyone can develop acne, it is most common in teenagers and adolescents. Studies have shown that acne is triggered by hormonal changes. During puberty, hormones increase for both male and female which causes sebaceous glands to enlarge and produce more sebum. Excess sebum results to clogged pores and outbreak in pimples. Genetic and hereditary factor also contribute to development of acne. It is most likely that a family member will acquire acne when it runs in the family. Stress causes acne as it makes the pores produce more oil that clogs hair follicles. Intake of certain medicines such as steroids, bromides and iodides aggravate acne. Eating food that contains high level of salt and fat such as chocolates and junk food store toxins to the body. If not properly removed by the body, toxins will clog the pores. Dirt and use of cosmetic products for a long period of time blocks the opening of pores thus resulting to acne formation.
If not treated properly, acne may become severe and may result to scarring of skin tissues. While having acne may be quite bothering, simple ways can be done to alleviate the symptoms of acne. Proper hygiene can ensure prevention of acne. Risk of exposure to dirt is inevitable thus oil builds up on the skin areas everyday. To remove dirt from pores, taking a bath daily will be really helpful. Eating healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables removes toxins from the body and helps the skin cells function properly. It is best not to squeeze, play around and prick pimples to avoid inflammation and further infection. Change of lifestyle such as sleeping early and regular exercise complement the prevention of acne. Exercise helps the skin cells bring nutrients to the body while removing wastes through sweat. Physical activity also reduces stress that causes pimples. There are over the counter anti acne medicines that also cure. While the effect of anti acne creams vary upon skin type, it is best to seek advise from a doctor.
Acne condition may range from mild to severe. For severe case of acne, it is best to consult a dermatologist. Just the same, having acne is normal, yet for acne free skin, precautionary measures should be taken.
